Fri 25 Jan, 1pm, No.11 Gordon Street
with Aastha Chauhan
Gharelu nuskhe & Muft ki salah (home remedies & free advise): Chamba, Uttarakhand
In the summer of 2010, Aastha Chauhan got the opportunity to work with a community radio station in the district of Chamba, nestled within the medicinal plant rich Himalayan state of Uttarakhand. With a grant for an ecology and community based project titled- Negotiating Routes: Ecologies of the Byways, supported by the Norwegian Embassy in collaboration with Khoj International Artists Association, she spent two months in Chamba recording home remedies for alternative medication and use of local medicinal plants, from nine villages in the district.
This was made possible with assistance from the team at local community radio station 90.4MHz Henvalvani. The audio recording was later edited into 28 clips of approx one minute duration each and is currently being aired on 90.4 MHz Community Radio Henvalvani as an advertising campaign to popularize the use of local medicinal plants and bring into conversation the fast depleting Himalayan ecosystem.
Asthaa was later invited to join the board of the Radio Station and continue to work with them on various aspects of programming, alternative education, health care and sustainability for the organic farmers (mostly women) of the region.
