Recreation of the 1903 Huntly Walking Competition
Deveron Arts' Walking Institute is calling all local businesses to take part in the recreation of the 1903 Huntly Shopkeeper Walking Match, to be held this July. The idea came from research carried out by Ron Brander a local historian, while looking at the archives of the Huntly Express. Brander found a number of references to local walking competitions held around the beginning of the 1900's. Staff at the newly formed Walking Institute want to recreate one of these competitions as a fun community event this summer and get everyone walking.
The 2013 competition will take place on Friday 26 July, 4pm, with a special talk about the historical competition walks by Ron Brander, on Wednesday 24 July, 7.00pm in The Empty Shop. Ron, will talk about the international history of how walking became a "pursuit" and look at the events that happened locally.
The route again will start from the Square but this time participants will only have to walk along Castle Street and up Marquis Drive around the Castle Hotel and back to the Square, a total distance 2,2 miles.
This time the Walking Institute is looking for shopkeepers, business owners and organisations to either walk themselves or nominate somebody else to complete the route, win a trophy and receive the winners accolade in the Huntly Express. Participants are welcome to design their competition outfits in the colours and branding of their shop or dress up in 1900's style clothes. They are also most welcome to raise funds for any charity as part of this fun summer event.
All business types are welcome to participate. Entries will be handed in to our office, Brander Building, Deveron Arts by 8.00pm on Tuesday 23th July.
