Archives
Our archives offer an insight into the many projects that have taken place at Deveron Projects over the years. From physical archive boxes to this website, our archives tell a story of the organisation, the projects and the times in which they were made.
We welcome visits from researchers, community members and artists who would like to look through our archives or chat about archiving with us.
The Deveron Projects archives are some of the most comprehensive archives of socially-engaged practice in the UK. Despite this, like all archives, what is included in the archives at Deveron Projects is subject to the wider systems in which we present and document artwork.
With much of our work taking place in public and between people, the interpersonal, experiential and embodied memories of the work are as important as formal documentation and institutional narrative in understanding the projects. This can in some ways be conjured through the archive boxes and documentation, but in many instances there is little information about how a project was experienced beyond the organisation and/or artists’ interpretation.
In some cases documenting and archiving can also interrupt the relational nature of our work. We will always prioritise the safety, comfort and consent of everyone involved in a project - and may choose not to include work or documentation in our archive to honour this.
We continue to add to and update our archives. If you feel there is an important addition, omission or update required in our archives please let us know.
We are working through these ideas and developing our practice in this area. Get in touch if you’d like to chat.
