Caretakers' Garden: Pricking out and potting on

After sowing seeds, what next? While most seedlings are still too small to resist outdoor conditions here in Aberdeenshire, we can give them more space and nutrients to grow large and healthy under cover, by pricking them out and potting them on.

In this workshop, we also sowed some more seeds – now we are closer to the last frost date, we can sow larger and faster growing plants, including beans, courgettes, squashes and corn.

Participants were welcome to bring along seedlings that have been sown at home or in previous workshops. There were also plenty of other seedlings requiring care and attention to practice with here in the Brander Garden. A workshop for everyone - including beginners or more experienced gardeners looking for a sociable and relaxed gardening session.

About the projectThis workshop forms part of our project Caretakers' Garden. Named after the former residents of the caretaker's flat at the Brander Building (now the Deveron Projects office!), Caretakers' Garden will build sustainable systems of care in the Brander and Square Deal gardens, for the benefit of current and future inhabitants. As a starting point, we are asking, what is our role in caring for these gardens in the present and into uncertain futures? How do we build the means for communities (human and more-than-human) to enjoy the gardens and care for each other in?  Together we will work to create a learning space for novice and seasoned gardeners - a space for exploration, experimentation and exchange. Regular workshops, drop-in sessions and artists' projects will open the gardens up, inviting new 'caretakers' to come along and learn, help take care and be cared for.
