The Gathering Table: The End
Book your ticket via Eventbrite.
Join us for an online book launch, celebrating the end of The Gathering Table, a project led by artist and chef Kawther Luay with Deveron Projects. The event will bring together project collaborators including Kawther Luay, Fionn Duffy, Natalia Palombo and Colectivo Amasijo, to share performances, invitations and reflections connected to a new publication, giving a ‘taste’ of the project and what has been learned through it.
The Gathering Table set out to explore local materials and ingredients around Huntly through foraging, cooking, crafting and eating. Over the course of a year, it made connections and fostered collaborations across people, species and cultures (human and more-than-human), to explore politics of food and hospitality.
From practical workshops and regular foraging walks, to experimental meals that play with guests’ expectations, the collaborations nurtured by the Gathering Table unpicked traditional power dynamics between the artist and their audience, the chef and their ingredients, the forager and the plants they have come to know. In performing these multiple roles throughout the project, Kawther created the conditions for active collaboration and agency, enabling the audience to perform host, the ingredients to transform and the plants to tell their stories of how they came to be known (or hidden) here in Huntly. The project culminated in a story, devised in three acts, that played out across an extended period of three months. Each act took form as a meal, performed in the homes of the ‘characters’ in the story– the fields in which barley is grown, to the sheds where the goats are housed, and the riverbed where clay is formed.
A ticket for this event includes a copy of the new publication, The Gathering Table, designed by Tom Joyes with Deveron Projects. The publication tells the story of the Gathering Table, across the three acts. It introduces the characters, collaborators and their transformations, inviting you to get to know the ingredients, processes and conversations through the recipes and choreography of each event.
