Mending for the Future

Mending for the future, darning and sashiko workshop with keng keng tang
Mending for the future, darning and sashiko workshop with keng keng tang

To coincide with this month’s Clothes Swap by Huntly Remakery, come along to Square Deal to join a mending workshop led by artist-in-residence at Deveron Projects, Keng Keng Tang. This workshop will lead you through the process of two visible forms of repair: darning, the process of interweaving thread to fix holes and worn areas, and sashiko, a Japanese technique that involves adding patches over holes with decorative stitches. As part of the workshop, you will mend two things:

  1. An item of your own choice, for example a holey glove, jumper or a ripped pair of trousers.
  2. A textile to gift to the community quilt currently being made by the Quilting Circle. This Quilting Circle takes place twice a month as part of Keng Keng’s residency. This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience, and all materials for mending will be provided. Please bring along a piece of clothing you’d like to learn to fix, or arrive early to find one at the Clothes Swap.  As the fashion industry continues to be the second biggest global polluter (second only to the oil industry), join us to learn skills that enable us to resist consumerism and find joy in meaningful relationships with textiles.  Access Information:
  • This workshop is free but booking is required. You can book online here, phone Deveron Projects on 01466 794494 or drop by the office behind Huntly Library.
  • Children and families are welcome to join in. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
  • We will provide tea, juice and snacks - do let us know on booking if you have any allergies or dietary requirements.
  • An accessibility guide for Square Deal community hub can be found here.
  • This workshop will be relaxed, with up to 8 people attending.

This workshop forms part of Keng Keng Tang’s Square Deal residency at Deveron Projects. Over 6 months, Keng Keng will be weaving mutual care, togetherness and rest, through food and textiles in Huntly’s creative community hub. More information about their residency can be found here.

The Huntly Clothes Swap is an initiative run by Huntly Remakery, taking place every other Farmers Market in Square Deal. Through a swap shop format, it aims to keep clothes in circulation, reduce waste, and save folks a few pennies too.
