November Farmers' Market

Another November, another United Nations climate change conference; COP27 kicked off on Sunday 6th November, this year taking place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt until the 14th November. Egypt's presidency marked the first COP to take place in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region, one of the most vulnerable areas of the world to drought, water scarcity and rising sea levels, but also an area whose economies rely on the global demand for oil. The potential of water scarcity and a just transition will be two of many topics discussed at COP27, but before it kicked off, we were at the Huntly Farmer's Market with a reading corner and the chance to kick start your own mini meadow... see below for more info!  We were joined by our gardener in residence Lindy Young to help you pot up your meadow starter plants, which have been happily growing all Summer in our Square Deal garden. Meadows are hugely important for our ecosystem and can be cultivated in any size, from a super small space to acres of land! Our market reading corner featured books bought as part of the world is ours in spite of all, a project with artist and educator Hussein Mitha. The project involved the formation of a youth climate justice club, exploring how climate justice can repair our world and considering education and its challenges in a time of climate emergency. The books highlight activist voices, future thinking and relationships with nature - grab a cuppa and have a browse!  For local events and information on climate change, check out Huntly Climate Action and NESCAN (North East Scotland Climate Action Network).  Image credit: Sandy Philip
