Quilting Circle #5

Quilting Circle 5 with Huntly Sewcial
Quilting Circle 5 with Huntly Sewcial

Take part in creating the quilt top* for a new community quilt at this collaborative Quilting Circle with The Huntly Sewcial. Since October, regular Quilting Circles have seen the creation of hand-stitched patchworks, naturally dyed fabric, and appliqued quilt blocks, with artist-in-residence Keng Keng Tang and invited guest workshop leaders. With this collection of textiles, this session will begin the process of jigsawing them together whilst considering the stories we will tell with this quilt.  This Quilting Circle will be running in tandem with The Huntly Sewcial, a monthly drop in sewing and craft meet-up. You are welcome to come along any time between 6.30-9pm to work on your own projects or to contribute to the quilt.  * A quilt top is the patchwork that makes the front of the quilt. Other layers include batting - the squishy middle layer of a quilt, and backing - the back fabric of the quilt: these three layers make what’s called a ‘quilt sandwich’.  This workshop is free and will run on a drop in basis, but please let us know if you have any access or dietary requirements we should be aware of if you are planning to come. You can do this by emailing jess@deveron-projects.com, phoning Deveron Projects on 01466 794494 or dropping by the office behind Huntly Library.   Quilting circles have long been spaces to gather, resist, and learn together, building solidarity through fabric and stitches. Put simply, quilting circles are meet ups where communities come together to make quilts, often through intricately stitching together layers of fabric. From the Alabama-based Freedom Quilting Bee, to Public Library Quilt’s Grief Quilt for Palestine, examples of quilting circles, or ‘bees’, can be found the world over: their common thread is always stories of community care and resistance. This quilting circle, which forms part of Keng Keng’s residency, will explore how mutual care and rest can be embodied and facilitated by a community, and how these practices can come to life through the processes of making and utilising a quilt.   No knowledge of quilt making or textiles is required to be a part of the Quilting Circle - this will be a relaxed session with opportunities to learn, ask questions and meet others. We will have sewing machines and materials available for you to use.  About this Quilting Circle’s collaborator: The Huntly Sewcial is a monthly sewing and craft meet-up, organised by Rosemary McCafferty and Colin Brandi. They have recently been making patchwork wall hangings for local organisation Networks of Wellbeing. They meet in Square Deal on the first Thursday of every month.  Access Information:
