Gardens
Deveron Projects cares for two public gardens in Huntly.
The Brander Community Garden and Square Deal Garden are havens for nature and humans alike, and everyone is welcome to enjoy them. There’s lots of ways to get involved with the gardens - read on to find out more.
Brander Community Garden
Head behind Huntly Library (the Brander Building) to find this thriving community garden. Originally the library’s caretaker grew tatties here, and more recently Aberdeenshire Council maintained the space when it was laid to lawn. Now, it is a beautiful, biodiverse space in the centre of town - a garden that works with nature to provide an abundance of food, shelter and diversity for humans and wildlife. It is cared for by Garden Caretaker Lindy Young, several groups who use the garden for their activities, and volunteers.
Over the years, the garden has developed through artists’ projects. In many ways the Brander Community Garden is a living archive, recording the deep thinking, care and conversations that have shaped the space.
Norma Hunter’s Edible Huntly trail established the espaliered fruit trees around the walls. Christine Borland’s Flax Turns created the ‘pizza slice’ beds in the lower garden to grow flax, now planted with more apple trees from The Town is the Garden. This project also contributed the greenhouse, forest garden beds and further fruit bushes, never mind the powerhouse of the space - the compost bins! More recently, Caretaker’s Garden explored networks of care in the garden, and created a perennial wild meadow in the lower garden, a new no-dig bed and ‘mini allotments’. As part of this project, artist Susie Dalton worked with Huntly Toads outdoor education group to design and build a shelter, where you can sit and enjoy the garden.
Square Deal Garden
A more formal garden behind Square Deal community hub, the Square Deal garden has a wheelchair accessible patio, a perennial wild meadow, small pond and cutting border.
