Residencies
Artist residencies form the backbone of our work at Deveron Projects. Residency is how we support artists from all over the world to live and work with us in Huntly.
Residencies enable artists to work collaboratively with our team and local communities to collaborate, experiment and expand their practices. Offering an intensive period of mutual learning, making and conversation with others, we carefully host artists with attention to their individual needs, ambitions and practices.
Over 30 years, we have developed a residency model that is flexible, accessible and meets artists where they are - in their personal lives and in the development of their creative practices. To support this, we currently host two different 'types' of artist residency:
Residency Commissions
Residency commissions invite artists to make new artwork in public, in collaboration with Deveron Projects' team and local communities. Artists will work with us over a sustained period, usually at least 3 months, but sometimes for longer, up to several years.
These residencies can be called projects. Artists make artwork in relationship between our town and local communities - our histories, infrastructures, politics, cultures, collective experience and knowledge, futures - and their practice, identity and lived experience. Importantly, the artwork is developed through the residency process, allowing for responsiveness, emergence and collaboration throughout.
On residency, artists are supported to make work in lots of different ways. This could include, but is not limited to:
- Researching - through meetings, conversation, visits, walking, making, drawing, reading...
- Public events / programming - bringing people together to share in conversation, mutual exchange, making and learning together, facilitated by the artist and Deveron Projects team.
- Studio-based practice - time for developing ideas, experimenting, making and exploring, planning and reflecting.
- Presenting - through the artistic process of the residency commission / project, artists may develop new artworks with collaborators to be presented in Huntly.
Sometimes Residency Commissions are advertised with artists invited to apply, and sometimes we will invite an artist whose practice aligns with our communities' goals and interests to undertake a residency. Residency Commissions have a budget which includes fees for artists and collaborators, production, travel and access.

Independent Residencies
Independent Residencies take place in the Artist’s House, our dedicated live/work space in the centre of Huntly. Supporting artists and creative practitioners who have their own funding, Independent Residencies offer time, space and support to carry out research and development work, on your own or with a collaborator.
These residencies do not support working in public. You can read more about Independent Residency here.
