Raise your voice in song with artist-in-residence Rah Naqvi, and come together to gossip, whisper and build solidarity with others through shared experiences of work. Are you a frustrated freelancer? A precarious project worker? A stressed superviser? A disgruntled dayshift worker? Come along to creatively vent and express your workplace frustrations and create new working songs for Huntly. 

Since May, Rah has been connecting with musicians and enthusiastic vocalists to explore the power of song to unite and tell stories, to share experience and build a picture of the present day. This journey has led Rah to explore North East bothy-balads and working song traditions from around the world.Grounded in histories of rural labour and protest movements, such folk music traditions are a powerful way of bringing people together to voice grievances, lament loss and spread news. 

Join us to build upon these legacies and create a new folk song for in Huntly. Through a series of five vocal and songwriting workshops, we will raise our voices in beautifully out of tune song, chants and vocal exercises. We will explore simple and fun exercises to write collective songs based on our experiences of work. Each session will build on the next as participants learn with and from each other, with the support of Rah and invited guest artists. Together we will make our voices heard and build solidarity in the process.

Accessibility

• Children are welcome to join in. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
• We will provide tea, juice and snacks - do let us know on booking if you have any allergies or dietary requirements.

• Each workshop will be relaxed, with up to 15 people attending.

Refreshments at this event will be prepared in a kitchen that may have traces of nuts, seeds, dairy and other allergens. Everything is clearly labelled and there are always vegan and gluten free options. About the event

Stand up, sing back, is taking place as part of Rah’s residency at Deveron Projects. Their residency is focused on building communities through foraging, song, traditional crafts and radical readings. You can find out more about Rah's residency here.

About the HOME Programme

This event is part of our HOME programme. Through regular events and artists’ residencies, HOME supports the everyday and creative practices of cooking and eating, chatting and caring, sharing skills and learning together. HOME regular events include Friday Lunch, as well as the monthly Food Chain cookery workshop and a stall at the Huntly Farmers' Market. These events celebrate local knowledge and experiences, and explore what it's like to live and work in and around Huntly. Through this work we aim to build more complex understandings of Huntly and its place in the world.
